If you don’t know already, zoning is done to make an HVAC system more efficient. When you zone your house, heating and air conditioning energy consumption will decrease that means less HVAC cost. So, it might seem like Zoning is the ultimate solution for all your heating and cooling needs. However, the truth is somewhat more complicated. You see, while zoning might be a good option for a big house with multiple levels, individual areas for dining, reading, sleeping, etc. – for smaller homes, just mini split air conditioners will work.

Here are the reasons why you should consider zoning your HVAC system –

You Need Zoned HVAC System When … by Rifat Ahmed

Reason 1 – If you have unoccupied areas in your home

As I have mentioned before, the main reason why you would want to zone your heating and cooling system is to make the system more efficient. By “making it efficient”, I mean to use the HVAC system at its best. This is done by cutting off the heated and air-conditioned airflow from certain areas or zones of your home.

When the heating and air conditioning is cut off from the unnecessary part or zones of your house, the parts where you and your family is sitting get a boost from the HVAC system. That means, your heating system (like a Heat Pump or Gas Furnace) and your central ac unit only work to heat or cool the necessary zones of your house.

So, if you have a big house where most of the rooms or zones are unoccupied, zoning might be a good solution.

Reason 2 – If you are experiencing uneven cold and hot spots

Sometimes when you have a faulty air conditioner or a malfunctioning heating system, you might experience harsh hot and cold spots throughout the house. While AC maintenance & repair is a solution, the long term solution is to zone your HVAC system since this uneven distribution is most probably caused inadequate heating and cooling equipment. By zoning the HVAC system, you can simply use the heating and air conditioning components for the rooms or zones where people are sitting or working. This way, you are taking the load of heating and cooling the entire house and utilize the HVAC components to work efficiently on the necessary room or zones.

Reason 3 – If your energy bills are skyrocketing

If your energy bills are rising too quickly, it is a clear sign that you are wasting a big chunk of the energy to heat or cool all the rooms and zones of your house.

For example, when you leave the bedroom to cook, you will need more heating and air conditioning in the kitchen than in the bedroom. Letting your HVAC system put the same effort in heating or cooling your bedroom as the kitchen is a waste of energy here. So, if your energy bills are skyrocketing, you should consider zoning the system.

Reason 4 – If you are needing frequent AC services and repair

Does your HVAC system require frequent appointments with HVAC technicians? Well, frequent HVAC repair is also a sign of an inefficient heating and cooling system. So, if you are spending too much on AC repairs lately, you should consult to HVAC specialists. They could tell you whether zoning would suffice or you’ll need complete HVAC system replacement.

Reason 5 – If you are short with the cash needed to provide individual heating and cooling solution for all the areas or rooms in your home

Lastly, you can or should consider if you have a monetary problem.

If you want to control the temperature of the individual rooms and areas of your house, there are only 2 options. First, you could buy mini split air conditioners or heating units for the individual rooms. But this is very expensive. So, the wisest thing to do will be to zone the HVAC system in your home.

Bottom Line

If you find yourself in any of those situations mentioned above, you should consider zoning your HVAC system. It will not only save you money from energy bills and AC repairs but also make the system more efficient. See this infographic for a quick summary – You Need Zoned HVAC System When … [Infographic]
