1.   Thermostat – On

If your furnace blows hot air sometimes and cold air other times, your home is not as warm as you set the temperature, then there is a possibility that your thermostat setting is turned on. This is not like other AC repair situations where you need professional HVAC gears to attend to the AC servicing needs.

When the thermostat setting is on, the furnace blower will run 24/7 whether the furnace is producing hot air or not. The solution to this problem is easy and you need to set the thermostat settings from ON to AUTO. Your problem is solved now and it will blow hot air only. 

2.   Dirty Air Filter 

If your air filter is dirty, then your furnace can blow cold air. Dirty air filter restricts the airflow of your furnace. Restricted airflow causes overheating. Your gas furnace is not producing hot air; there may be a problem in your ignition system. In this case, your gas furnace cannot light the fuel and because of that, it cannot blow hot air. You can confirm this problem with the following steps: 

1. Check the manual book on how to ignite your model's pilot light.

2. Relight the furnace pilot light. If the flame stays on, your furnace is alright but if it doesn’t, you may have a thermocouple problem. In this case, it requires adjustment or replacement.

4.   Faulty Gas Valve

Cannot relight the pilot? There is a high chance that your gas valve has a fault. If your furnace hasn’t gone through cleaning, the gas valve will not work because of dirt. You will have to clean the gas valve to ensure gas flow. 

5.   Out of Fuel

If your furnace is oil-fired then the oil tank of your furnace may be empty. Because of that, your blower will continuously circulate cold air instead of hot air even after there is no oil to burn. In this case, you will have to refuel your furnace tank.
